Doncaster Rovers: Top of the league? Why not? John Marquis accepts challenge set by Grant McCann

After witnessing his side secure a fourth consecutive win with victory over Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, McCann told his players he wanted to see them move top of the league by the end of play on Saturday.

Rovers '“ who travel to Accrington Stanley on Tuesday before hosting Fleetwood Town on Saturday '“ sit three points shy of current leaders Portsmouth.

On being asked about the target set by McCann, Marquis was fully on board.

'Why not?' he said. 'We've got two games, so why not?

'We've got Accrington away so we're going to have to recover correctly after a long trip back from Plymouth.

'But we can go into both these games full of confidence.

'Four wins in a row '“ I definitely don't think we got it last season, maybe the season before around January.

'I can't remember us having four in a row for a while so why can't it continue?

'In this league you can win two or three games in a row in this league.

'If you get a fourth, then you can get a fifth or a sixth and it does show a good team.

'People must be looking at us now and are fearful and that they're going to be worrying about playing us.'

Marquis marked his 100th league appearance for the club with his 50th goal as he netted a double in the 3-2 win at Plymouth.

And he said he his enjoying his role in McCann's side as it continues to deliver success both personally and for the team as a whole.

'I am playing well,' he said.

'It's a role that I feel I'm relishing at the moment.

'The manager wants me to play a certain way where the main focus for me is making runs and stretching defences.

'I need to keep believing that I'm going to get the ball.

'There was one where Mallik [Wilks] shot when he probably should have shot.

'But the gaffer just said keep making the runs and two minutes later Herbie Kane put me through and I scored.

'The manager just breathes belief into everyone and confidence.

'Overall, I feel we can be proud of how we did and how we won the game.

'It could have been a bit more comfortable but as long as we're winning games it doesn't matter.'
