Should Rovers survive the drop having slumped so dramatically since the turn of the year - and being as many as eight points adrift of safety just last week - it might earn a place in the club’s decorated recent folklore.

But Ferguson says surviving relegation from League One will not be a cause for celebration in his household.

“The fans and everyone at the football club would be delighted [if we don’t go down],” said Ferguson.

“But personally I certainly wouldn’t be having a party about it.

“We’d be absolutely delighted given the position we were in.

“But there’d be no celebrations about staying in League One.”

Rovers host Coventry City today in the knowledge that by 5pm they could be as few as two points from safety, relegated, or somewhere in between.

It promises to be a tension-filled afternoon at the Keepmoat Stadium, and Ferguson has called on the club’s fans to again play their part in helping the team.

He said: “We hope that the fans get right behind us, which I’m sure they will. They were excellent again on Tuesday. They can see a team that’s really fighting to stay in the league.

“We’re going to need everyone, of course we are.

“It’d be great if we could get it down to the last game in front of our own fans. I think that would make a big difference.

“But we’re just focused on Coventry and we’ve got to make sure we’ve got the same passion and energy about us that we had in our last home game.”
