Reports emerged on Thursday morning that Rovers had turned down bids of £500,000 and £750,000 from Aberdeen and Peterborough United for the 26-year-old.

While we can confirm both Aberdeen and Peterborough have made offers for Marquis, the figures quoted are wide of the mark.

And they were rejected regardless, with the club desperate to retain their leading scorer from the past two seasons and not in a position where they need to raise funds.

A club spokesperson said: "We can confirm that John Marquis is not for sale.

"Manager Grant McCann understandably wants John as part of his squad and sees him as a key player as he looks for success this season.

"And Gavin Baldwin is under no pressure to generate income through player movement.

"We have received bids but John is not for sale."

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed his club had shown interest in Marquis.

In a post on Twitter, MacAnthony wrote: "Doncaster wanted 2 of our players that are listed so we enquired about him yes. It didn't go anywhere so we moved on. Presume this is agent or them letting this out to drum up price elsewhere as is normal practice I guess. We have moved on now."

Marquis has netted 40 goals in 99 appearances for Rovers since joining in the summer of 2016.

He missed just one league game last season with 50 of his 51 appearances coming as starts. He completed 46 full matches.
