The arrival of McSheffrey, who can play as an orthodox striker or as a left winger, boosts Darren Ferguson's attacking options for the final nine games of the season following Lynden Gooch's return to Sunderland and also Curtis Main's decision to remain at Oldham Athletic.

The 33-year-old, who has made more than 400 career appearances and cost Birmingham City £4million to prize him away from his hometown team Coventry City in 2006, has featured in 28 games for the Iron this season and scored five goals.

But he is out of contract at Glanford Park in the summer and has been allowed to join Doncaster by new United boss Graham Alexander.

Ferguson said at today's pre-match press conference that McSheffrey may not be the only new face in the squad heading for Colchester on Easter Friday.

One further deal has been lined up and could even be completed today, and there is still a possibility of a third signing this week before Thursday's loan deadline.

Ferguson also confirmed today that Dany N'Guessan (toe) has been ruled out for the season.

Mitchell Lund will miss the trip to Colchester through injury but number two goalkeeper Marko Marosi has returned to training.
