Ferguson’s senior squad has been trimmed to 18 players - three of which have been transfer-listed - following the release of six players.

The Scot had stated his desire to have two players competing for each position but later hinted at the prospect of having a smaller squad next season.

The Star asked Ferguson about the calibre of player he is looking to sign this summer.

“We’ve got to try and get the best players we can for what’s available,” he replied, speaking prior to finding out his budget.

“Perhaps it may be a case of not getting as many but getting a bit more quality. That might be something I have to do. That has to be in my thinking. “Or it might be we manage to get four or five of real quality. I don’t know yet.

“I would certainly go for quality over numbers, I think I’ve got no choice with that.

“I do feel that we need, if we can, to get another striker in to help John [Marquis]. There’s no doubt about that. We’d be looking for one that knows the league. But everyone’s after strikers and they are the ones that really cost.

“For me, I’ll be going for adding quality and then see where we get to.”

On his desire to have two players for each position, he added: “That was something I would’ve liked to have done. Whether I can or not, I don’t know.”

Liam Mandeville, Tyler Garratt and Mitchell Lund have been placed on the transfer list.

James Coppinger is currently in contract negotiations with the club.
