Doncaster Rovers: League Two experience will help me - Wright

Young centre back Joe Wright might only have 20 Football League appearances on his CV.

But he reckons his spell in League Two with Accrington Stanley last season will give him a bit of a headstart on his new Doncaster Rovers teammates.

Wright, 21, played his part in Stanley reaching the play-offs before getting injured in February.

And his familiarity with the fourth tier, he says, should only benefit Rovers.

“Having that experience of the league already from last season gives me that slight advantage going into the season,” said Wright.

“I know what the teams are like in League Two and I think that helps.

“I learned a lot last season, going up against more experienced players, and that benefitted me.

“Now it’s about developing that even further at Doncaster.”

Yorkshire lad Wright turned down a new deal at Huddersfield Town to join Doncaster earlier this month.

“I’m from Selby so it’s not far away,” said Wright. “I obviously know a lot about the club. They’re not a League Two team. They deserve to be in the leagues above that.

“I know how big the club is and I know it’s a fantastic opportunity for myself.

“I was offered a contract at Huddersfield but personally I didn’t think it was one that would benefit myself.

“I came to the decision that I wanted to leave the club in January, so I had clubs watching me while I was playing for Accrington.

“Unfortunately I did get injured in February but obviously the gaffer at Doncaster has shown enough faith in me to offer me a contract and it’s one I’m delighted to sign and I’m looking forward to my future at the club.

“I’d had a taste of first team football at Accrington and it was something that I enjoyed and I thought that would benefit me a lot more than playing at Huddersfield. First team football is what I need.

“I enjoyed my time at Accrington and I’m very thankful to the manager there, John Coleman, for giving me that opportunity, and I’m obviously thankful now for the opportunity that I have got at Doncaster.”
