Doncaster Rovers lacked '˜usual cleverness' in Accrington Stanley defeat

Grant McCann felt his Doncaster Rovers side missed their clever edge as they slipped to only their second league defeat of the season at Accrington Stanley.

An 88th minute strike from substitute Offrande Zanzala was enough for Accrington to secure the win and end Rovers' four game winning streak.

McCann felt there was little to separate the two sides but said a touch of cleverness could have seen Rovers through.

"I thought there was nothing in the game really," he said.

"I thought after half time, after the initial ten minutes when they started quite bright, we controlled the rest of the game.

"The first half was a much of a muchness really.

"If I'm going to be critical of the team tonight, I think we just lacked that little bit of guile and cleverness that we've shown this season in the final third."

McCann pointed to a first half miss from Mallik Wilks at the end of arguably Rovers' best attacking move of the game as a key moment.

He said: 'There was two big chances in the game '“ Mallik's one in the first half that we didn't take, and Zanzala's chance which he does take.

'That is the difference between winning and losing when you're not at your fluent best.'
