Williams and Marquis have forged a profitable partnership since the latter joined Rovers from Millwall in the summer.

And Marquis feels he is playing alongside possibly the best striker in the division.

“When I signed here, I was surprised he was going to be staying,” Marquis told The Star. “However, getting to know him a lot more, for someone who has had such a good career, he’s always working hard.

“Off the pitch, he’s trying to help other players improve, like myself.

“For me, Willo is probably one of the best strikers in the division. His goalscoring record throughout his career has proven that.

“In front of goal he’s lethal.

Marquis’ presence appears to have taken a lot of the weight off the shoulder of Williams, who often struggles to hide his frustration on the pitch.

The 24-year-old believes he and Williams are very similar in their approach to the game, and that has been the secret of their early success as a duo.

He said: “I think the way he plays is a bit similar to myself in terms of his work rate and how he hassles defenders.

“It helps both of us knowing our partners is going to be working his socks off for the other.

“We don’t mind who scores as long as we’re plugging away, getting goals as a team and working hard for each other.

“I think the whole team can work off that because when you’ve got a front two who set the tempo like we do, it really gets the players and the crowd going.”
