John Marquis put Rovers ahead in the first half only for Plymouth to equalise through Ruben Lameiras in a first half of which the hosts at Home Park had the better.

A much improved second half performance saw Rovers take control, racing into a 3-1 lead with goals from Marquis and Matty Blair before Graham Carey pulled another back deep into stoppage time.

McCann revealed he had been far from happy with his side in the opening period but was delighted with the response after the break.

'I had to raise my voice a bit at half time,' he said.

'I called them over when we scored and told them '˜this is not good enough, it's not good enough to win.'

'I told them that again at half time and told them that is why I called them over when they scored.

'I could sense that Plymouth were going to come back into the game.

'But the response second half just showed the character again and the resilience of the group to go and score and score again '“ and possibly score a few more if luck was on our side.

'Their keeper has made some great saves from Alfie May and Mallik Wilks.

'It's a good three points and not an easy place to come.'

McCann was particularly pleased with the performance in the second half and believed Rovers could have been out of sight.

'It's a good result,' he said. 'I thought it was an excellent performance actually in the second half.

'We could have had five or six really. Their keeper has made some excellent saves.

'The first half was probably even-Steven if I'm being truthful about it.

'We didn't start the game well which was disappointing.

'But then we scored with a good finish from John.

'Then I think we let them get a foothold in the game after that a little bit.

'We didn't go and get the second goal.'
