Rovers have lost seven of their last eight games and missed a golden opportunity to put daylight between themselves and the League One relegation zone last night.

Ferguson was incredibly disappointed with the performance, believing his side lost the derby day battle which let both him and the club’s supporters down.

“I’ll tell you who I feel let down for, the fans,” Ferguson said.

“They are quite rightly critical, critical of me absolutely. If you keep losing games it’s always the manager that will pay which is understandable.

“We spoke about it before, the following we would get which was actually bigger than I expected.

“I spoke to the players about the fact we let them down and I think they’ve let me down as well.”

Ferguson says he understands if supporters believe his players have not been working hard enough during their recent poor run but insists that is not the case.

“They’re not chucking it, no way,” he said. “We just lost the battle against a very aggressive team. We knew it would be hard for us if we didn’t match that.

“For whatever reason, be it that we went 1-0 down, we didn’t manage to handle that bit of the game.

“I’m not saying they’re not trying, I’m not saying that at all.

“As a fan you can look at that and think they’re not even caring but that might be just a lack of belief.

“I really do believe it’s not a case of that. There’s a loss of form and belief and we just have to find a way of winning a game.”

Craig Alcock missed the game with a calf problem but is likely to return for Saturday’s trip to Bradford City.
