Doncaster Rovers: Ferguson urges players to make the right choices

Darren Ferguson believes his Doncaster Rovers players must improve their decision making if they are to better their worrying defensive record.

Ferguson was left frustrated by the manner in which two goals were conceded at Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup last week, coming after numerous defensive errors which have slowed Rovers’ progress this season.

As he looks to get his side back on track defensively, he is putting the onus on his players to make the right choices.

“I think decision making has been poor,” Ferguson said.

“Both goals against Oldham, clearly the goals against Wycombe and a couple of the goals at Blackpool, the decision making was poor.

“That is basically the be-all and end-all really. You’ve got to make the right decisions on the pitch.

“We keep putting the work into them whether we’re keeping clean sheets or not – the amount of work is always the same.”

Craig Alcock and Frazer Richardson are available for selection in the league following their respective injury issues.

Ferguson believes the added defensive bodies will only help stem the flow of goals conceded.

Rovers head to Exeter City this afternoon, a side that have yet to win on home soil so far this season.

But Ferguson insists Rovers cannot expect to stroll into town and come away with a positive result.

He said: “Their form and results away from home are certainly better – they haven’t had a win at home yet.

“They’ve played a variety of formations and they’re quite flexible.

“They’ve got obvious threats, Reuben Reid up front in particular.

“We’ll be mindful of the threats and, as always, it’s about what we do.”
