Doncaster Rovers: Ferguson had 'no influence' on terms of Curtis Main loan deal

Doncaster Rovers manager Darren Ferguson says he had 'no influence' on the terms of Curtis Main's loan switch to Oldham Athletic.

Main’s recent goalscoring exploits for their relegation rivals have only heaped further embarrassment on a club without a win in 17 games and seemingly in free fall towards League Two.

The 23-year-old striker, who has one year on his contract at Rovers still left to run, has scored three goals in his last three games for the Latics - helping them to clamber out of the drop zone at Doncaster’s expense.

Main himself has opted to remain at Boundary Park after his loan deal was set up in a way that meant both clubs and the player all had to agree to a re-call, as opposed to a re-call clause being inserted into the contract.

Those agreed terms, which have backfired massively on Rovers in recent weeks, have been the subject of several awkward questions for Ferguson as a result of Main’s hot streak in front of goal - and The Star recently asked Rovers if he had any regrets about the deal.

“It’s something I had no influence on, to be honest, the way the deal was done,” answered Ferguson.

“It was done in a way that all three parties had to agree to it.

“It’s unfortunate that the three parties have to agree to it.

“When he first went out on loan it was the right thing to do because he needed games. It’s just worked out that the boy wanted to stay there, so it’s an unfortunate situation.

“But I’m not going to sit here and blame Curtis Main for us not winning in however many games, because that’s not right.

“Let’s get this right, it’s not helped the problem but it’s not created the problem, put it that way.”
