The Scot overheard from the dugout what he described as “harsh” comments from some supporters in the West Stand.

There was also a smattering of boos at the full time whistle - although referee Carl Boyeson may have been the target of those.

Relegated Bury came from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 before Andy Boyle’s second half equaliser ensured the points were shared.

Ferguson later admitted that, before kick off, he had not given up all hope of his side winning their last six matches and potentially gatecrashing the play-offs but conceded that their very faint top six hopes are now over.

Rovers have lost six of their last 31 games in all competitions and have lost once at home in the league since October.

“I’m a little bit disappointed with how much frustration there was throughout the whole place, I’ve got to be honest,” said Ferguson.

“I think we’ve been on a hell of a run.

“It’s our first season back in this league and we need all the support we can get really.”

He added: “Once they scored it affected us too much. We lost our shape and the game was too open.

“It was just a lack of discipline [after conceding the first goal].

“I don’t know whether they [the players] felt at 2-0 we’d got to go on and win four or five.

“We became frustrated, and the fans became frustrated.

“The fans behind me, in particular, were very frustrated. I think some of the comments were a bit harsh, I’ve got to be honest.

“But I’ve had that before, in the game after we got promoted last season.

“I think the players have got to hold their hands up and say in the end we were lucky to get a point.

“You have to give Bury credit but we’re disappointed in the manner of our performance.”

Doncaster have conceded three or more goals in a game six times this season.

“All the goals were easily avoidable,” said Ferguson.

“We gave a foul away when we don’t have to for the first goal and our defender’s in the wrong position.

“The second goal is self explanatory and the third goal Tommy [Rowe] is 15 yards too high up the pitch.

“It’s very unusual for us to lose three goals in a game so we have to address that, and quickly.”

Rovers sit 13th in League One - eight points clear of danger, ten adrift of sixth spot.
