Doncaster Rovers: Darren Ferguson promised changes after '˜unacceptable' performance

Rovers turned in arguably their worst performance of the season as they slipped to a disappointing 4-2 defeat at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

Ferguson was angered by his side’s failure to execute the game plan they had worked on all week as part of a shift to a 3-4-3 formation.

And he promised there will be changes to the line-up for Saturday’s clash with Wycombe Wanderers at the Keepmoat.

“Oh there will be changes,” he told The Star. “I can’t keep giving people chances.

“One or two of them, I keep giving them chances but enough is enough.

“We didn’t do enough of what we had worked on. I knew my team last Monday. I knew my system last Monday.

“We wanted to exploit areas we felt we could. We wanted to overload midfield, get width from the wing backs and control the game from the back.

“We just didn’t do it and we didn’t try to do it.

“I couldn’t see us trying to do what we’d worked on.

“I’m not going to accept that, them at times not trying.”

Ferguson defended his decision to switch from the 4-4-2 diamond which has served his side well so far this season.

The Rovers boss insisted his main focus was to field three attackers rather than being motivated to use a three man defence, which he has favoured on numerous occasions since arriving at the club.

And he said his decision to bring in Mathieu Baudry for Joe Wright was made in order to give the latter a mental break.

Ferguson said: “The simple thing is, Joe has played a lot of football and Baudry is fit now.

“It would be difficult for me to play Joe Wright in every single game. Not so much physically, but mentally.

“He needed a break.

“Joe has played in every cup match so I’ve not been able to get a break into him.

“People will see we’ve lost four goals when we’ve changed centre halves.

“But when I look at the goals; the first one we’ve switched off, the second is stopped if we defend the back post better, the third was a free kick and the fourth it was a poor pass in midfield.

“It’s not about systems or individuals, it’s not doing what we were supposed to do.”
