The visitors appeared to have grabbed all three points after going 2-1 up in the 90th minute but Rovers hit back to grab two goals in injury time to seal a 3-2 win.

And Rovers were quick to rub salt into the Cheshire side’s wounds by tweeting a link to the last-gasp goals which also included the message “sorry not sorry.”

Crewe responded with a clip to Rovers getting relegated at Leicester at the end of the 2013-14 season with the hashtag #whoops as well as taunts about their 8-0 victory over Rovers in December 2002, adding the line “Thank you and goodnight.”

Rovers then hit back printing a photo of the League One table upside down - appearing to show bottom placed Crewe at the top.

An accompanying tweet read: “@crewealexfc ouch! Wrong side of bed this morning? Hope this cheers you up.”

But fans were unimpressed with the Twitter war, with Rovers fan Robert Ghosh tweeting: “Just read @drfc_official tweets with @crewealexfc I’m guessing it’s Junior Takeover day again today? #drfc.”

Rovers fanzine Popular Stand tweeted: “You know what football is all about? It’s about official club twitter accounts exchanging #epicbantz. Can’t we just enjoy a win?”
