Doncaster Rovers 2 Coventry City 0: Ferguson praises '˜relentless' Rovers

Darren Ferguson was full of praise for his players after a 'relentless' display accounted for Coventry City and maintained Doncaster Rovers' hopes of a great escape.

“It was a very good performance,” said Ferguson.

“From the moment we went ahead we were quite relentless in what we did.

“I was just a little bit disappointed we didn’t make it more than two but you can’t ask for much more than that.

“We worked a lot on making sure we got against [John] Fleck in the middle of the pitch, he’s the one that tries to dictate, pressing them as much as possible and keeping a really high line.

“They did it well. The players were given instructions and they were very good today at executing them.

“We thoroughly deserved the win. We’ve just got to maintain it now against Crewe and Burton.

“As a team we’ve got a bit of momentum now. You can see the belief.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had such a dominating victory,” he added.

“But it shows the players have got a good temperament to play that well in must-win games.

“We played well against Wigan too and as manager I’ve been pleased with them lately.

“The first goal was really important because their best period was the opening part of the game.

“But after we got the first I felt we’d go on and win the game.”

Some of the shine was taken off the victory by Shrewsbury Town’s surprise win at Gillingham.

But Ferguson said: “All the lads were on their phones in the dressing room and I said to them ‘look don’t be disappointed, you’ve got to be delighted with that performance’.

“We can’t control what happens elsewhere. The Fleetwood result now is probably a good one, the draw [against Blackpool].

“We can still catch four teams.

“If we lose to Crewe it’s over. If we lose to Burton it’s over. We’ve got to focus on winning those games.”
