Doncaster road closure saga nears end as new railway bridge is finally installed

A long-running road closure saga on one of Doncaster’s busiest routes is nearing its conclusion following the installation of a new railway bridge.

Thorne Road between Clay Lane and Edenthorpe has been the focus of a number of road closures, delays, diversion and disruption since the summer of 2019 when a major construction project began to install a new railway bridge over the carriageway.

Now the new deck is finally in place with the road set to re-open next week.

The work has been dogged by delays and engineering problems, leaving thousands of Doncaster drivers frustrated by a number of road closures.

Workers are working around the clock to get the project finally completed, with the road set to re-open on February 11.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said: "We will be working 24/7 to get the works finished and the road back open as soon as possible.

"We do know how frustrating these works have been but please bear with us. It will be a big improvement along this route once complete, and we are getting there.”

For health and safety reasons there will is no pedestrian access under the bridge but there are mini buses available – observing Covid-19 rules - to transport pedestrians around.

Sainsbury’s is open during the works as will its access.

Signposted diversions are in place during the closure. Anyone driving a vehicle over 14’ 3” will be signed via Armthorpe as there is the low bridge on Barnby Dun Road.

The road will reopen on February 11 at 6am.
