“We aimed to finish in the top four in the regular season and we did that by finishing fourth.” said assistant coach Peter Green.

“I think we possibly could a finished a bit higher, or at least a bit nearer the top two, and we’ve given ourselves a tough task. But we’ll not concede defeat until it’s mathematically impossible to finish in the top two.

“Due to injuries some players have not played as much as we’d have liked and we’ve had to play some combinations we’d probably not have wanted to do as a result – particularly at half-back.

“It didn’t help that we had a lot of new faces. So it’s been a bit of a learning curve for a lot of people but overall we are happy with the players we brought in.

“There is a very good team spirit within the squad and even when players have been left out, in some cases for long periods, there have been no problems and they’ve continued to train hard.

“We believe that to have a good team you need not only good players but good people. Gary [Thornton] did his homework on the people we looked to bring in an effort to develop a culture and environment that’s going to bring out the best in the players.”

The top two play-off at the end the Super 8s with the winners being promoted and the losing side playing the fifth-placed side at home in the play-off semi-finals.
