The Maple Tree in Woodfield Plantation has joined forces with 12 others across the UK to celebrate St George’s Day with a unique celebration.

The Balby pub, part of the Generous George family of pubs, wants to mark April 23 by hosting the largest gathering of people named George to set a new record.

The pub is calling on Georges, Georgies, Georginas, Georgias and even Mr and Mrs George to stand up and be counted at a family fun day at the pub.

Ian Morris, who manages the pub with his wife Jill, said: “We’re sure this will be the biggest celebration of all things George our pubs have ever seen.

“Everyone knows a George - George is a name that spans age and sex – and we want to gather men, women, girls and boys, of all ages, with every possible version of the name on St George’s Day for this attempt.

“As a thank you for taking part and for helping us set a new record, all Georges in attendance will receive a complimentary drink, or a free ice cream for kids when they present proof of their name,” he added.

“Following the birth of Prince George in 2013, there has been a real surge in popularity for the name, so we’re hoping parents who have chosen the name will bring their children along, to swell our numbers.”

To mark the event, the pub is planning a family fun day with entertainment to appeal to Georges of all ages, and their friends and family too.
