Doncaster pub sealed off after wall collapse showers beer garden with rubble

A Doncaster town centre pub beer garden has been sealed off after it was showered with rubble when a wall collapsed.

The outside area at The Red Lion in Market Place has been temporarily shut after part of a wall adjoining the premises crumbled and showered tables and chairs in the revamped pub with rubble and masonry.

Eddie Gershon, spokesman for pub owners Wetherspoons, said: "A few bricks came loose from part of the wall, to the side of the beer garden, at the back of the adjoining shops.

The Red Lion re-opened last year after a 2.6 million revamp.

"The area was closed off as a precaution and repairs are taking place today.

"The beer garden will reopen as soon as possible, once those repairs have been completed."

Kai Fleetwood was among several drinkers in the pub garden at the time and said: "I was sat there when it happened. So were several other people, about ten feet away from it.

"The brick work fell away, made a very loud crashing noise and that made a few people jump."

No-one is thought to have been injured in the collapse.

The historic pub, the birthplace of Doncaster's St Leger horse race, was closed for five months while work took place with new furniture, carpets, fixtures and fittings introduced.

The work also included a conservatory style extension as well as the new beer garden as well as a 14-bedroom hotel on the first and second floor of the building.
