A FIRE service campaign urging residents to sign up to a new service giving them free reminders to test their smoke alarms has won the backing of MP Caroline Flint.

Ms Flint, who represents Don Valley in Doncaster, gave her support during a visit to Edlington fire station, where she heard firefighters have dealt with more than 100 house blazes in the last three years where there were no smoke alarms fitted or batteries were missing or flat.

The campaign calls on residents to register to receive emails or tweets reminding them to test their smoke alarms.

Ms Flint said: “Many households have smoke alarms and they have undoubtedly saved many lives. But they can only save lives if the batteries are working, so I urge as many people as possible to sign up.”
