An MP is urging Doncaster’s Second World War veterans to sign up to a scheme allowing them to visit the battlegrounds where they fought.

The Heroes Return 2 programme uses Lottery funds to allow veterans to re-visit places they saw active service.

Rosie Winterton, MP for Doncaster Central, is backing the programme.

She said: “I’m delighted to be able to highlight this excellent scheme, which allows our heroes to return to the places where they saw active combat.

“We must never forget the sacrifices that they made for our country and for freedom across Europe and the wider world, and I hope as many people as possible sign up and apply for the grants.”

So far around 57,000 veterans, their widows, spouses and carers, have been awarded funding totalling £28 million to return to places including Italy, France, Greece, Holland, Germany, the USA, the Far East and Australia, as well as to make trips within the UK.

The grants are available for veterans or their widows, along with spouses and a carer.

Shaun Walsh, from the Big Lottery Fund, said: “Through Heroes Return 2, we offer WW2 veterans from the UK, Channel Islands and Republic of Ireland grants from between £165 to £8,140 towards travel and accommodation expenses to enable them their spouse and carers to make trips back to places across the world where they served, or make a commemorative visit in the UK.

“We are keen to offer the opportunity of funding to as many WW2 veterans as possible and would be grateful for your help in publicising this grants programme on your website, through social media, and via any other channels that might be appropriate.”

Further details can be found at or by calling our Heroes Return helpline 0845 0000 121. There is no deadline for applications but trips must be taken before Dcember 31, 2015.
