Doncaster man honoured by Queen for over 30 years service in police force

A Doncaster man who has dedicated his life to the police force has been recognised for his achievements with a special award from the Queen.

Father-of-three Paul Brown is to be awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours for his policing work.

Working in the mounted section for some 32 years there are few officers in South Yorkshire with as much experience in the role.

During his time in the role the 60-year-old, who retired earlier this year, became a recognised expert, helping to advise and develop new staff as well as numerous Public Order Commanders.

Paul, of Burgwallis, says he is very surprised to have been awarded the prestigious accolade.

“I was just in complete disbelief when I received the letter,” Paul told the Free Press.

He added: “It’s just a complete surprise. When I got the letter I thought ‘is this really for me?’

“It’s very nice to receive some recognition for the work I’ve done, but you just don’t expect it.

“To me it was always my job, something that I got paid for, so you don’t expect anything more.

“It’s just totally unbelievable to have been given this award, and I’m very honoured.”

“The thing I’m looking forward to the most is having tea with the Queen in her back garden at her garden party next summer, it’ll be a real honour.”

The outstanding courage Paul has displayed in policing some of the most challenging events locally, regionally and nationally, has been cited as one of the reasons for his nomination .

These include high profile events such as Bradford riots and clashes between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield Utd, Newcastle and Sunderland, Olympic Games and numerous demonstrations and protests.

Paul is a recognised expert in this area of policing and is said to be admired by all ranks and grades of officers.

Other reasons given for Paul’s nomination include the way in which he has acted as a dedicated ambassador for the service whether it is through attending schools and galas, official ceremonies or representing at staff funeral ceremonies for several years.

As well as excelling in his role with the police, Paul has also gained outstanding achievements in his chosen sport of tent pegging which involves him competing in uniform against HM

Forces and Policing Services on horseback with a revolver, lance and sword.

Paul is nationally recognised representing Great Britain internationally winning numerous Gold medals. The 60-year-old has also been praised for his charity and voluntary work and the

recent example of joining the Special Constabulary is evidence of commitment to voluntary work.

He has supported Riding for the Disabled and organised Bluelight charity events, mounted open days, undertaking these in his own time and raising substantial amounts for charities.

In addition to his role in the mounted section, Paul also represents and is highly regarded on National Public Order Tactics and National Mounted working party.
