Kevin Sinfield has suggested Doncaster Knights are rugby union's equivalent to surprise Premier League contenders Leicester City.

Cross code star Sinfield is hoping to shake off a calf strain to play for Yorkshire Carnegie against the Knights at Castle Park today.

Both teams are on course to finish the season in the Championship play-off positions - but it is second-placed Doncaster who are surpassing people’s expectations.

Writing in his Yorkshire Post column, Sinfield said: “Clive Griffiths has done an outstanding job down at the Knights when you consider they only came back into the Championship last season and they are now genuine title contenders.

“I think you only need to look at Leicester City in the Premier League to see what a team with a collective will and vision can achieve and we know we will face a tough challenge this Saturday.”

He added: “I am hoping I will be fit to be available for selection. I had a calf strain last week and the medical staff did not want to risk any further damage, we took the view it was better to miss a game than aggravate the injury and be out for a month.”

Declan Cusack has been named at fly half for Knights after completing the head injury return-to-play protocol, replacing Simon Humberstone. Ollie Stedman, however, misses out with a hamstring strain.
