Doncaster family to remember MJ with charity fundraiser

When six-year-old Marc Poole, known as MJ, fell suddenly ill with a suspected case of meningitis he was rushed to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, where he died two days later.

An inquest into the Coppice Special School pupil’s death earlier this year at Doncaster Coroners’ Court was told that if the adorable youngster had been given medication on the evening he was admitted to hospital he could have survived.

Little MJ died in May last year, and MJ’s family are preparing to host a fundraiser in his memory in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) a year on from his death.

MJ’s grandmother Mary Marsh said the family also hope the fundraiser will help to create more awareness of the condition, and maybe even prevent other families from experiencing the same heartbreak.

“It’s helping MJ’s mother to cope with it,” said Mary, of Shaftesbury Avenue, Intake.

The 66-year-old added: “If we can raise some money for the MRF and some good can come out of all of this then that’s great.”

The event is set to take place at the Athletic Club House in Mexborough at 6pm on May 14.

Entertainment on the night includes an auction with a whole host of incredible items up for grabs including an iPad, a signed Manchester United football, a signed Sheffield Steelers shirt, a caravan holiday in Skegness and a hotel stay for two at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry.

There will also be a raffle with prizes including a £100 M&S voucher on offer.

Entry is free and there will also be a disco and a free raffle for children.

Mary continued: “I can’t thank everyone who has donated prizes enough for their generosity. We’ve all been so touched by it. We’re hoping it will be a good night and that we can raise a good amount of money.”
