Doncaster Deaf Trust receives cash for specialist smoke alarms

Doncaster Deaf Trust, which applied for the grant, received over £11,000 which was then match funded to provide specialist smoke alarm systems.

The syetem, which includes a smoke alarm head, flashing light and vibrating pillow pad, is activated when a smoke alarm is triggered.

John Weston, a fundraiser at Doncaster Deaf Trust, said: “We are delighted that South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have been able to provide this grant which will help to keep deaf people safer at home.

“The project will benefit at least 60 vulnerable people in our region and is part of the Trust’s plans to set up a project to improve Community Safety for deaf people.”

Steve Helps, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue’s area manager for prevention and protection, said: “This project will strengthen our existing partnership work with the hearing impaired community and enable us to reach even more vulnerable residents to keep them safe at home.”

The alarms will start to be installed in January.
