Doncaster Council announces when it will start collecting green bins again

Earlier this year green bin collections were suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, to enable prioritisation of the collection of black and blue bins.

Green bin (garden waste) collections will be starting again with a temporary, revised schedule from 23 June meaning each household will have their green bins collected once every four weeks. The first round of collections will take until mid-July to complete.

Residents across the borough will receive a letter through their door next week notifying them of the date their collection is set to resume. Residents should read this letter – or check the DMBC website – to find details of their revised collection dates and present bins on the kerbside at 7am on the appropriate collection

Cabinet member for Communities, Voluntary Sector and the Environment, Cllr Chris McGuinness said: “Thank you to residents for bearing with us at this difficult time and for keeping their green waste at home or composting it.

“I’d also like to thank bin collection crews who are key workers and have been working with a reduced workforce due to self-isolation and shielding and staff and vehicles that would normally collect green waste have been collecting black and blue bins to keep these collections going. The amount of residual and recycled waste has increased during lockdown and levels have been similar to what we would experience around the Christmas and New Year period.

“We are reintroducing green bin collections monthly at first to enable us to clear the backlog of green waste and to make sure physical distancing can be maintained and that services are safe for staff and residents. We hope to be able to reintroduce fortnightly collections in the near future and residents will be kept informed.”

Residents are also being reminded:

Make sure your bin is not too heavy. There is a risk it may break when lifted onto the vehicle, and if staff think it is too heavy to lift safely it won’t be collected. If you are unsure, please take some waste out.

Don’t leave extra waste next to green or black bins. The only extra waste which can be left out is extra recycling on blue bin collection days. If you have been storing extra garden waste in a bag or other container, please empty this in to your green bin after your first collection, or consider taking it to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. Bins might be collected at a different time of day, so to avoid a missed collection please ensure you place your bin out for collection by 7am on your collection day.

Residents are urged to check their collection day nearer the time by visiting www.doncaster.gov.uk/recycling where details of collection days will be available by the end of next week, and to find out helpful information about bin collections and recycling and a reminder of what goes where when it comes to recycling your waste.
