However, NHS England said the number of deaths reported today may not be entirely accurate as the “Covid Patient Notification System did not operate for a period of time on Saturday 16 May.”

There is often a delay in reporting deaths over the course of the weekend.

The figure also does not include deaths in care homes, of which there have been 11 reported cases in Doncaster, making the town’s latest death toll 158, although the figure is thought to be far higher.

The numbers relate to deaths recorded and reported in the last 24 hours in the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which includes Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Montagu Hospital in Mexborough and Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop.

Upwards of 200 patients have been allowed home after treatment.

It comes after the NHS officially added loss of smell and taste to the list of UK coronavirus symptoms, in addition to a fever and persistent cough.

Anyone suffering from either must self-isolate for seven days and their family will need to stay indoors for 14 days, under new NHS guidelines.
