Doncaster coronavirus death toll passes 200 as new NHS figures are released

The number of coronavirus deaths in Doncaster has passed a grim milestone after the figure climbed above 200 in new NHS figures.

Three further deaths mean that 201 people have now died after testing positive for COVID-19, up from yesterday’s figure of 198.

Earlier this week on Monday, the Government said the number of deaths – 55 – was the lowest since before lockdown began.

The NHS said today that a further 88 people, who tested positive for Covid-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 27,707.

The UK wide total hit 40,883 on Tuesday - while the Office for National Statistics believe the actual figure is 51,766 up to June 9.

Locally, there have been 278 deaths in Sheffield an increase of one on yesterday, 178 in Rotherham and 130 in Barnsley.

Both Rotherham and Barnsley recorded no new fatalities.

The figures relate to deaths within hospitals run by Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This includes Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Mexborough’s Montagu Hospital and Bassetlaw Hospital at Worksop.

More than 300 patients treated for coronavirus across the Trust have been allowed home after receiving treatment.

The UK has seen more than 40,000 deaths, only the second country in the world after the USA to reach the grim milestone.

Brazil has now surpassed Italy as the third worst country in the world for deaths with more than 37,000 fatalities.
