Highlighting the issue of flytipping in the town, Doncaster Council’s posted the image of a damaged and dirty settee which had been dumped in an alleyway.

A spokesman said: “We're excited to announce that Doncaster has been chosen as the location for a British remake of Friends,” referencing the opening credits of the popular US comedy series where the cast were seen fooling around on a similar coloured sofa in the outdoors.

They followed it up with a spoof of the show's theme tune, writing: “So no one told you life was gonna be this way. Your seat's got mould, you're cold. You're in an alleywaaaay.”

Council chiefs then took their anti-flytipping message to some of the show’s stars, tagging actors David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry in a follow-up tweet.

“For rights reasons, and to avoid legal action from @DavidSchwimmer and @MatthewPerry, the British remake of Friends will centre around the Gunther character, as he tours around Doncaster picking up fly-tipping for the #ThisisMyDoncaster campaign. We're all very excited,” the tweet said.

Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and Matt Le Blanc also starred in the hugely successful comedy about a group of flat-mates and their relationships.

The authority won praise from other Twitter users for the message.

Louise Crossley wrote: “Dear Doncaster Council, if there is an award for Social Media accounts, please, please, please enter whomever runs this one for you: they are stellar!

Another wrote: “I only started following you recently but you are regularly making me laugh I I now wish I lived in Doncaster.”

And another added: “Yet again...you have captured attention with your social media account... Bravo... I hope the fly tippers stop.”
