The shock vandalism attack was discovered at around 6.45am this morning when Firefly drivers getting ready to take cancer patients for life-saving treatment at Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield realised thieves had taken precious metals from the exhausts of all of their five vans, rendering them unusable.

Since the discovery, Firefly has been working to rearrange transport for the 30 patients needing to make the 25 mile journey today, but some will be forced to make their own way there.

The vans were parked at the Mercedes-Benz - Northside Truck and Van dealership in Balby Carr Bank, when the theft occurred.

Firefly Director, Paul Taylor, said everyone at the charity was angry and disgusted by what had happened.

He said: "Whoever has done this is the scum of the earth, it's as simple as that.

"They've taken these vans off the road for the sake of a few quid.

"They're putting lives at risk, I'm speechless."

The charity has run a free minibus shuttle service between Doncaster and Sheffield's Weston Park Hospital for the town's cancer patients since 2006, and is staffed by volunteers.

Firefly Director, Ian Bacchus, said the vans could be off the road for the next week as a result of the theft, and the repairs are likely to cost several thousands pounds.

He said: "Can I please ask if anyone can help out by allowing Firefly hire a courtesy car or people carrier until we can get the problem resolved."

Anyone who is able to help should call Ian on 07515632897.

The incident has been reported to South Yorkshire Police.
