Doncaster boxer wants to emulate local champions

Tom Bell wants a place in Doncaster's boxing hall of fame.

The 18-year-old super bantamweight wants to be the next champion to roll off the area’s production line.

He comes from good stock, his brother Andy was BBBofC British super flyweight title holder from 2007-8 and had an English belt to his credit too.

Last Saturday, the greenhorn brother picked up his second professional win, at Rotherham’s Magna Centre.

He outpointed previously unbeaten Scott McCormack, from Glasgow in a four-rounder.

Bell was pleased with his performance against a gritty rival.

“He was a tough lad. He did his best, I did my best, it was a good fight.”

McCormack had a good chin: “he was getting caught with some good upper cuts and shots, he was coming forward all the time.”

Bell believes he improves the longer a fight goes on.

“I want to move up into a six rounder next and see where it goes from there.”

The teenager said he had dreamt of being a professional boxer since he was seven years old, following his brother’s footsteps.

But he knows he has to improve his defence. “I am still getting caught with a few odd shots but I’ll keep improving.”

Asked which British boxers he’d like to emulate he went for Donny ring heroes Jason Cunningham, who has won English and Commonwealth bantamweight titles and Gavin McDonnell who has collected EBU and British super bantamweight belts.
