Don’t give to city beggars

POLICE in Sheffield city centre are urging kind-heared shoppers, office workers and visitors to donate to registered charities rather than to beggars asking for cash.

They issued their appeal after arresting a particularly prolific beggar.

Begging is illegal under the Vagrancy Act.

Around 1,000 people have been spoken to by police in Sheffield city centre as part of an operation to engage with the homeless sleeping rough.

For the past three years officers have carried out early morning patrols to look for vulnerable people on the streets to advise them about services available to help them.
