Dom Howson's Match Verdict: Aston Villa 1 Sheffield Wednesday 2
The Star's Dom Howson analyses the decisive moments of Wednesday's impressive 2-1 victory at Aston Villa this afternoon.
KEY MOMENT: Steven Fletcher's header. It looked like being one of those days as Wednesday wasted a host of good chances, including a Fletcher sitter after a superb Adam Reach centre.
But the Scotland international put that miss behind him, planting a bullet header out of Orjan Nyland's reach following a fine cross by Joey Pelupessy to condemn Villa to their first home defeat of the campaign.
KEY MAN: Marco Matias was typically modest about his own display after Wednesday's away triumph. 'It was a great performance," he said. "It doesn't matter who scores but I'm happy to score to help the team get three points." Matias was immense. He worked well in tandem with Fletcher and he deservedly grabbed his third goal of the 2018/19 season. Jos Luhukay should take an awful lot of credit for the upturn in Matias's fortunes. He has managed him well, played him regularly from the start and it has brought the best out of the former Nacional player.
REFEREE WATCH: It is the second Owls fixture David Webb has taken charge of this term and he has been virtually faultless in both fixtures. He dished out three bookings but tried to let the game flow. Got the key decisions right.
SUMMARY: What a time for Wednesday to produce their best performance of the season. It looked, on paper, a tough away assignment but the Owls rose to the challenge both collectively and individually. Their ball retention was far better than on Wednesday, they scored two good goals and defended resolutely. The spirit and togetherness in the team was there for all to see as Villa piled on the pressure late on. An excellent away day. Bring on Leeds United.
