Doctor cycles in support of CORE

Consultant gastroenterologist Dr Mark McAlindon will take to his bike this month as part of GastroCycle, which will see him cycle from Newcastle to Liverpool, in support of CORE.

Mark, who works for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and whose team won an award for their swallow-able pill cameras called ‘capsule endoscopy,’ said: “I look after people, young and old, with long-term conditions like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. CORE is the only charity that supports research in all these areas, so it’s vital we raise money for them.”

As a veteran of the GastroCycle, now in its third year, Mark also notes the importance of relationship building between doctors from all over the country.

He said: “It’s really important for creating contacts that are useful for training and research. It reinvigorates enthusiasm for those working in an NHS that is currently under intense pressure.“
