Diving: Olympics place for Sheffield's Freddie Woodward

Sheffield's Freddie Woodward will make his Olympics debut after being confirmed in the Great Britain diving team for Rio 2016.

Seven of the 11 have competed at Olympic level before with London 2012 bronze medallist Tom Daley and Tonia Couch set to make their third appearance at a Games.

Chris Mears, Jack Laugher, Rebecca Gallantree, Alicia Blagg and Sarah Barrow are the other returning Olympians while Daniel Goodfellow, Lois Toulson, Grace Reid and 20-year-old Woodward are debutants.

Woodward competed for England in the men’s 3 metre springboard event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he won a bronze medal with his partner, Nicholas Robinson-Baker.

Earlier this year he said: “I’ve proved to myself now that I’m good enough to dive amongst the best in the world and pressure them. A lot of the people that I have beaten, I really look up to and admire. To come out ahead of them was really exciting.”

Daley and Gallantree head to Rio 2016 on the back off World Championship gold in the team event at Kazan 2015.
