Distinction for door firm as it expands

Barnsley-based Distinction Doors, the UK's largest distributor of composite doors, has upgraded its software system to keep pace with growth.

The firm, based on Wentworth Way, Wentworth Industrial Estate, Tankersley, has upgraded its Epicor ERP system, which processes sales orders, sends purchase orders to suppliers in the Far East and tracks stock levels.

Distinction sells up to 8,000 doors a week which are distributed throughout the UK and Ireland. It has sold more than 3m since it was established in 2004.

The company’s chairman and founder, Drew Wright, started his career in the window industry in 1979 before travelling to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to set up a PVCu window firm.

While there, he discovered Nan Ya Plastic Corporation which makes composite doors that look like timber. Drew brought the first door to Britain in 1999 and the firm opened five years later.

Gareth Williams, IT and operations director, said: “We weren’t making the most of the Epicor ERP software, especially due to the lack of IT on site. We had built up a variety of customisations but this ultimately meant that the software wasn’t as flexible as it could be. We needed to strip it back and get the latest version to start to use it to its potential.”
