Disruption to rail services in South Yorkshire as first day of strike action begins

Rail passengers across South Yorkshire have been told to expect disruption today as staff on Northern trains hold the first of six days of strike action.

Rail union the RMT will hold six days of strikes on consecutive Saturdays – 25 August, 1 September, 8 September, 15 September, 22 September and 29 September – which will impact on rail services in the region.

On Saturday 25 August - the first day of RMT strike action - the company say they will operate almost 30 per cent of their services, with very few running before 9am and after 6pm.

All customers are advised to check before travelling and, where necessary, may want to seek alternative modes of transport.

The long-running dispute concerns plans to remove conductors from most Northern rail train services, moving to so called driver-only operation (DOO).

Across the north of England there are a number of major events taking place this weekend and customers are urged to be aware of the impact the amended timetables will have on travel to and from those events.

These include Manchester Pride, Creamfields in Warrington and Leeds Festival.
