YOUNG wheelchair users will go head-to-head in a sports contest.

Junior wheelchair basketball players from Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Wakefield will battle it out at the Northern General Hospital’s spinal injury unit today.

The event, hosted by Sheffield Steelers Wheelchair Basketball Club, has been designed to give its younger players their first chance to play in a competitive game. Disabled people interested in trying out the sport themselves are also invited to attend from 12noon, to get a taster.

Lorraine Waring, secretary of Steelers Wheelchair Basketball Club, said: “These guys come together and train every week but some have never played competitively. This gives them something to train for.”
