Dinnington are Cup TV star turns

THE FA Cup sprinkled its magic touch in South Yorkshire last night, putting in a historic appearance, enticing a ground record crowd and inspiring the underdog to spring a surprise.

Dinnington Town and Maltby Main - two clubs out of a record entry of 741 - shared their spot of FA Cup history by getting this season's tournament underway with the television cameras there to mark the occasion.

In front of a record crowd of 602 for Phoenix Park , the site of the start of football in Dinnington courtesy of the village's miners back in 1908 but rebuilt from scratch since the club's re-birth in 2000, Dinnington pulled off a surprise 2-1 win over Maltby who are a division above them in the Northern Counties East League's Premier Division.

Maltby took the lead with a cracking finish from Ashley Longstaffe following a free-kick but a combative first half spilled over into a player spat as the teams went off at half-time which led to referee John Thornhill threatening to abandon proceedings. Dinnington, with Matt Griffin firing over a great chance, carried the game to Maltby in the second half and spun the tie their way in a dramatic 60 seconds.

Firstly sub Kieran Gallagher pounced on 70 minutes after a Michael Blythen header had been blocked and inside a minute, Matt Wragg's run set up Any Lynam who produced a smart turn and finish.
