Visitors are invited to dig deep and support local and national charities during the National Gardens Scheme Festival weekend.

As part of the scheme, a secret garden in suburban Sheffield will become a visitor attraction for a day.

Tricia and Alistair Fraser will throw open their garden to the public on Sunday, June 5, at their 1970s-built house, which lies at the foot of the small cul-de-sac of Hallam Grange Croft, Fulwood.

The modest frontage, with a planted area of no more than a few square metres, holds little clue to the delights beyond.

The sloping, third of an acre rear garden faces south-east and is stocked with many unusual perennials, particularly hardy geraniums, hostas and geums.

It is planted to give year-round colour, but is at its best in spring and early summer.

Tricia said: “We really enjoy opening our garden and explaining how we’ve developed it over the years.

“It’s hard work getting ready for the open day but we get a lot of pleasure and satisfaction from it and we love to share our passion for the garden with our visitors.”

The fourth annual National Gardens Scheme Festival will see more than 400 gardens across England Wales open their gates to the public to raise money for charity, with up to 50,000 visitors expected.

Tricia added: “We find they enjoy walking round the little paths we’ve created in the garden, but, because of steps into the garden and the sloping nature of the land, it is not suitable for disabled access.”

Admission is £3. More details at www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/find-a-garden/Garden website.
