DICKIE Bird is set to open a new purpose-built care home in his home town of Barnsley tomorrow.

The retired cricket umpire, who has been awarded the OBE and MBE, is invited to Mapplewell Manor Care Home, Greenside Avenue, Mapplewell, as its guest of honour.

Mapplewell Manor will create 90 full and part-time jobs to the area.

Care Home operator, Silk Healthcare, has invested £5 million in the development – a new residential 83-bed care home and senior day centre specialising in dementia care.

The home boasts spacious rooms with en-suite facilities, a café, a beauty salon, a Victorian courtyard, a coffee lounge for residents and their families and landscaped gardens.

The opening ceremony is to be held at 11.30am tomorrow.
