A LIB Dem Euro MP has announced her resignation from the European Parliament after almost 13 years – and is set to be replaced by her husband, without an election.

Diana Wallis, the only Lib Dem MEP for the Yorkshire and the Humber region, said she had made the decision after mounting an unsuccessful bid to become European Parliament president.

Because European Parliament seats are elected under proportional representation via a list of candidates for each party, there is no by-election.

Ms Wallis’s husband, Stuart Andrew, is next on the Lib Dem list to replace her, although his appointment is subject to approval from party colleagues.
