Details surface of Roma migrants episode of Channel 4 Sheffield Page Hall documentary

The new series is set to explore the impact of immigration on the community in the area.

Keeping Up With The Khans, made by the production team behind the hit Channel 4 show Benefits Street, which focused on communities with high unemployment, was filmed over 15 months in Page Hall.

Today, more information has surfaced from Channel 4 about what the series will contain - particularly, an upcoming episode about Roma migrants.

A synopsis of the show’s second episode states: “This episode focuses on the Roma community. Over the past five years more than 1,500 Roma migrants from Slovakia have moved into Page Hall’s tightly packed terraced streets.

“They’re hoping to build the sort of prosperous lives for themselves that previous generations of immigrants to the area have.

“Some long-standing white residents and established immigrants have become frustrated with the influx of Roma into the small community and accuse them of anti-social behaviour.

“Others have tried to give the new arrivals opportunities to make a better life for themselves.

“Sebastian has recently arrived from Slovakia and has been given work washing cars by a local second-generation Pakistani business owner, who says: ‘It doesn’t matter where you come from; if you’ve got that work ethic, you’re welcome. Bums we don’t deal with.’

“Meanwhile, migrant Erik works in a local restaurant and dreams of becoming the first Roma singing star, serenading his colleagues with his tuneful, if not lyrically perfect, rendition of Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On.

“Local Pakistani businessman Wahid has taken Erik under his wing and before long he’s singing on one of the UK’s most popular TV talent shows.

“The episode also visits the villages in Slovakia where the majority of the Roma in Page Hall come from, to see the conditions they are leaving behind to start a new life in Britain.”

The first episode will be broadcast on Channel 4 on February 4.
