A derelict pub shut down by the police was given a new lease of life and has just celebrated its fifth birthday.
The Railway pub, in Wadsley Bridge, was in a bad state when landlady Jean McDermott took it over at the beginning of 2010.
Jean, who worked full time at a nearby working men’s club to pay the bills while she gradually renovated the building, even slept in the bar with her dog while the living quarters were being overhauled.
The 62-year-old said: “It had been closed down by the police for a year; the ceiling was hanging down, most of the windows were smashed and there was water leaking all over the floors. Most people would have taken one look and bolted for the door, but I’d been the landlady there for seven years when it was a Whitbread brewery house and I knew the area and locals well. I knew it was worth the challenge and I’m proud to have turned five this month.”
