Derbyshire's snapped broom sweeps world

Five paragraphs about a broom which was snapped in half in a Derbyshire village have swept the internet by storm.

The tongue-in-cheek story - Another broom snapped in half in Derbyshire village- has been viewed more than 15,000 times on the Derbyshire Times' website since Monday.

One of the most-popular threads on Reddit, the light-hearted tale has gone down a storm on social media.

It's been tweeted by broadcaster Jeremy Vine and the Guardian's Simon Rickets - among many others both at home and abroad - and picked up by The Poke and Angry People in Local Newspapers on Facebook.

Now the BBC wants to feature the story on its No Such Thing as the News show.

Reporter Michael Broomhead, who broke the exclusive, said: "When a contact, Adam Ward, tweeted me about this, I couldn't brush it under the carpet as I knew it'd put a smile on people's faces.

"I never thought it'd be so popular - but thankfully our website could handle all the traffic.

"A few people have told me to clean up my journalistic act - but the majority can see the funny side.

"Some people said I would sweep awards with the story, with one guy suggesting it could be a Pulitzer Prize winner."

Michael also received this sinister email from 'Jack the Snapper' who warned: "I'll strike again. No brooms are safe."
