Derbyshire Constabulary will lose five hounds and their handlers over the next two years, meaning there will be 12 members of the team by 2017.

The section helps with a variety of jobs, including searching for suspects or missing people, crowd control at football matches and sniffing out drugs, money or guns.

Another commented: “Terrible news and a huge mistake. The value of our dog sections is immeasurable.”

Derbyshire Constabulary, which has lost about five per cent of its budget because of Government cuts, is yet to make an official statement on the news.
