DERBYSHIRE PLANE CRASH: Investigations continue after pilot dies

Investigations are continuing after a pilot died when his light aircraft crashed into a field in Apperknowle.

Emergency services were called to Summerley Road, near Summerley Airfield, at 1pm on Sunday following reports that an aircraft had crashed.

The pilot died of his injuries.

He has not yet been formally identified.

At the scene of the crash on Sunday afternoon, DCI Darren De'ath, on call leading investigator, said: "There was a single occupant within the light aircraft.

"It would appear the plane was due to land (at the airfield).

"We don't yet know the cause of the crash."

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is investigating the incident.

An AAIB spokesman was unable to say what type of aircraft was involved nor how long their investigation is likely to last.

A spokesman for Summerley Airfield, which is also known as Apperknowle Airfield and Coal Aston Airfield, insisted there was 'no fault' with the landing strip.

He said the wreckage had been taken away by investigators.

The spokesman did not want to comment further.

The airfield, which is used for general aviation purposes, consists of a single 600-metre-long grass runway.

It is is operated from a nearby farmhouse and prior permission is required for landing.

Residents have taken to social media to tell of their sadness at the tragedy and offer their condolences to the pilot's loved ones.

Commenting on Facebook. Helen Andrews said: "Very sad.

"Sending our thoughts to the family involved."

Craig Mason said: "Awful news.

"My thoughts go to the pilot’s friends and family."
