Chesterfield Borough Council is holding a session for people who plan to stand as Parliamentary candidates in the General Election in May. It will take place at Chesterfield Town Hall at 3pm on Monday, March 9. Candidates who want to stand in elections for Chesterfield Borough, Brimington Parish or Staveley Town councils can attend sessions at Chesterfield Town Hall at 6pm on Monday, March 2, Staveley’s Speedwell Rooms at 5pm on Wednesday, March 4 and at Chesterfield Town Hall at 5pm on Thursday, March 12. • Stuart Yeowart has been selected as UKIP Parliamentary Candidate for Chesterfield in May’s General Election. Mr Yeowart, a self-employed driving instructor, has lived in Chesterfield since the age of seven. He said: “UKIP will not privatise the NHS. We will ensure the NHS is free at the point of delivery and time of need for all UK residents. We will ensure that GPs’ surgeries are open at least one evening per week, where there is demand for it.” He urged residents to visit www.ukip.org to view a list of UKIP’s policies.

• Two nurses will take on a gruelling charity challenge to help beat Alzheimer’s disease. Kelly Bennett and Sam Wain will fly to Vietnam next Wednesday and cycle 342 miles to Cambodia to raise much-needed money for the Alzheimer’s Society. Over the last 12 months, Kelly and Sam have raised more than £18,000 for the charity. On Friday they will use spinning bikes to cycle 342 miles in preparation for the challenge. • Staff at a Chesterfield building society are appealing for donations of food to help society’s most needy. The Nottingham Building Society, in Burlington Street, will give the produce to Chesterfield Food Bank. A spokesman for the branch said: “The foodbank supports a variety of desperate people in the area. We are collecting tinned and long-life food as well as nappies and hygiene products.” If you would like to donate, simply visit the branch by the end of February.

• Staff at the Gordon Lamb ŠKODA dealership in Chesterfield are celebrating the start of a new era.
The dealership, on Discovery Way, is now open for business after underging a major makeover. Jon Sudbury,general manager, said: “This is a hugely exciting time for everyone connected with the company. It’s been hard work but 100 per cent worth it. We’re really looking forward to showing off our new facilities to our existing customers and welcoming many new ones.”

• Members of the public are being invited to attend a board meeting of Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust. • The chief executive of Chesterfield Royal Hospital is the latest addition to the Destination Chesterfield board. • The Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance is appealing for more collection tin volunteers. A spokesman said: “It is vital that extra funds are raised to keep the life-saving charity running.” Last year the air ambulance completed 100 more missions than in 2013. North East Derbyshire MP Natascha Engel has voiced concern at cuts to Derbyshire fire service. The service faces a 40 per cent reduction in its budget. Speaking in Parliament, Ms Engel said: “My worry is that these cuts are undermining public safety and that people across the county will be put at risk as a result of reduced cover.”
