Demolition approaches at former Sheffield hotel

Demolition of Sheffield's former Grosvenor House Hotel is due to start in earnest '˜imminently'.

Plans to knock down the old hotel, on Charter Square, to make way for the Sheffield Retail Quarter, were approved last year. Since then specialists have been removing asbestos from inside, meaning the main block is still standing.

Coun Leigh Bramall, Sheffield Council’s cabinet member for business, skills and development, said: “A great deal of work has been continuing in the background. We are beginning discussions with tenants to proceed with the next phase of demolition of the main structure imminently.”

The hotel - once considered one of the city’s most luxurious places to stay - closed in 2009.
